Directions for using public transit -- The
Port Authority of Allegheny County (PAT) operates frequent bus service on the Lower North Side near the original Buhl Planetarium. Bus schedules can be obtained at bus schedule racks located at three subway stations in Downtown Pittsburgh: Gateway Center, Wood Street, and Steel Plaza, and also at the
Amtrak Train Station and at the
Greyhound Bus Station.
> From Downtown: Bus routes with the numerical prefixes: 1, 6 (EXCEPT bus route 6B), 11, 12, 16, 17, and also bus routes 500 and 501. Each of these bus routes go within two (or, in a few instances, three) blocks of the original Buhl Planetarium.
Board these bus routes in Downtown Pittsburgh (most bus stop signs include a list of the bus routes served at that bus stop) --
Liberty Avenue at 6th Street (Heinz Hall Garden Plaza): Bus routes 1D, 1F, 6A, 6C, 6D, 16B, 16F, 17B, 500.
6th Street at Ft. Duquesne Boulevard: Bus routes 1D, 1F, 6A, 6C, 6D, 16B, 16F, 17B, 500.
Penn Avenue (south side) midway between 6th Street and 7th Street: 11C, 11D, 11E, 11F.

Bus route 500: Fifth Avenue at Washington Place, opposite Diamond Street (Chatham Center), and Sixth Avenue; also Sixth Avenue at Bigelow Boulevard/Ross Street, Smithfield Street, and Wood Street (across from Wood Street Subway Station); also Liberty Avenue at Sixth Street (Heinz Hall Garden Plaza); also 6th Street at Ft. Duquesne Boulevard.
Bus route 501: Forbes Avenue at Grant Street, Smithfield, Street, Wood Street, 219 Forbes Avenue, and Stanwix Street; also Liberty Avenue at Market Street and Wood Street Subway Station; also 9th Street at Penn Avenue.
To reach Buhl Planetarium when using one of these bus routes, disembark from the bus at --
Bus routes 11C, 11D, 11E, 11F, 16B, 16F, 17B, and 500: North Avenue at Montgomery Place
Walk south two blocks to reach Buhl Planetarium.
Bus routes with numerical prefixes 1, 6 (EXCEPT bus route 6B): East Ohio Street at Cedar Avenue
Walk west three blocks to reach Buhl Planetarium.
Bus routes 11A, 12A: East Ohio Street near East Commons Street
Walk west two blocks to reach Buhl Planetarium.
Bus routes 16A, 16D, 501: Lacock Street at Federal Street
Walk north two blocks to reach Buhl Planetarium.
Frequent return bus service to Downtown, from the Allegheny Center area, is available at two bus stops, each located one block away from Buhl Planetarium: bus stop on northern side of North Commons Street and bus stop on western side of West Commons Street.
> From Oakland (university/medical civic center district): Bus routes 54C* and 500.
> From South Side: Bus route 54C*
* Bus route 54C is now the only bus route that actually goes right past the original Buhl Planetarium. This bus route was formerly the 77/54 streetcar line, made famous as "The Flyin' Fraction" by Pittsburgh radio personality Rege Cordic.
> From Beaver County: Route 1 of the Beaver County Transit Authority provides bus service to the North Shore bus stop of General Robinson Street and Federal Street (at PNC Park). Walk north along Federal Street following Federal Street walking instructions from there.
Directions for driving --
> From Downtown: Cross Roberto Clemente Bridge (formerly the 6th Street Bridge); on days when a baseball game closes the Clemente Bridge to vehicular traffic, cross the Andy Warhol Bridge (formerly the 7th Street Bridge). Continue driving north from the Clemente Bridge on Federal Street (or from the Warhol Bridge on Sandusky Street) until the street reaches the large Allegheny Center Mall. Parking in Children's Museum lots
(parking fee), adjacent to the Children's Museum, is available for people paying to visit the entire Children's Museum or eating in the cafe. Metered parking spaces (parking fee) are located along North Commons Street (north periphery of Allegheny Center complex, a block away from Buhl Planetarium), the northern section of East Commons Street (two blocks east of Buhl Planetarium), and at the western edge of the Allegheny Commons East Park (three blocks east of Buhl Planetarium: Union Place at East Ohio Street). On weekdays, parking is available in the three-level garage under Allegheny Center (parking fee), a half-block south of Buhl Planetarium; follow Federal Street walking instructions from there.
