Dear Jane:

During the debate regarding the Children’s Museum’s use of the Buhl Planetarium building, there was much concern about the intention to remove part of the building’s east wall, which held an astronomical quote on the wall’s exterior from the 19th Psalm of the Bible:

"The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth His handywork. Day unto day uttereth speech, and night unto night sheweth knowledge." Attached is a photograph of this inscription, on the east exterior wall of Buhl Planetarium.

As you may recall, removal of this wall was opposed by both Friends of the Zeiss and the Pittsburgh History and Landmarks Foundation, in verbal testimony before the Pittsburgh Historic Review Commission on 2002 March 13. At that time, the Children’s Museum said that they would store the inscription from this wall (which, of course, remains property of the City of Pittsburgh) for future reassembly in another location.

On Friday evening, I noticed that the wall fragments, which include this inscription, were lying on the ground in the new fenced-in area of the Buhl Planetarium building’s east yard, just outside of the emergency exit from the building’s former Hall of the Universe.

Is the Children’s Museum now in the process of reassembling this inscription? If so, where and how do you propose to display the inscription to the public?

Sincerely yours,

Glenn A. Walsh
