Dear Jane:
During the debate regarding
the Children’s Museum’s use of the Buhl Planetarium building, there was much
concern about the intention to remove part of the building’s east wall, which
held an astronomical quote on the wall’s exterior from the 19th Psalm of the
Bible:
"The heavens declare the
glory of God; and the firmament sheweth His handywork. Day unto day uttereth
speech, and night unto night sheweth knowledge." Attached is a photograph
of this inscription, on the east exterior wall of Buhl Planetarium.
As you may recall, removal of
this wall was opposed by both Friends of the Zeiss and the Pittsburgh History
and Landmarks Foundation, in verbal testimony before the Pittsburgh Historic
Review Commission on 2002 March 13. At that time, the Children’s Museum said
that they would store the inscription from this wall (which, of course, remains
property of the City of
On Friday evening, I noticed
that the wall fragments, which include this inscription, were lying on the
ground in the new fenced-in area of the Buhl Planetarium building’s east yard,
just outside of the emergency exit from the building’s former Hall of the
Universe.
Is the Children’s Museum now
in the process of reassembling this inscription? If so, where and how do you
propose to display the inscription to the public?
